Four days. I am starting there.

The argument in your parents’ driveway lasted eleven minutes. What came after it lasted four days, and that is the bit I have come to apologise for.

You do not have to read past here

Four Quiet Days

Boxing Day, your parents’ driveway, and then most of a week of me being polite in kitchens. Written down properly, because I did not say any of it at the time.

Plainly

I stopped speaking to you for four days.

We argued about whether to stay the second night. That is genuinely all it was about. It took eleven minutes, and I was short with you in front of your dad, who went off to look for a de-icer he had already found.

Then I loaded the car, put side A on, and did not say anything for ninety minutes. On the 27th you asked “are we ok”. I read it at 7:12 and answered at 22:40 with one word. On the 28th we passed each other in the kitchen and apologised for the doorway and nothing else.

I have called that being calm for about ten years. It is not calm. It is a way of making you carry the whole thing on your own until I feel like coming back.

The four days, in order

  1. Boxing Day, 16:20
    Eleven minutes in the driveway

    Eleven minutes in the driveway

It was about whether we stayed the second night. That was the whole subject. Your dad went off to look for a de-icer he had found an hour earlier.

  2. The drive back
Ninety minutes, side A, no talking

Ninety minutes, side A, no talking

I put the tape on so the car would not be silent, and then let the tape do all of it. You looked out of the window somewhere past Newark and I let you.

  3. The 27th, 07:12
    “are we ok”

    “are we ok”

Read at 7:12. Answered at 22:40, with one word. Fifteen hours to type four letters I already knew the answer to.

  4. The 28th
A whole day of being polite

A whole day of being polite

We passed each other in the kitchen twice and said sorry about the doorway, and nothing at all about anything else.

  5. Tuesday
    The good coffee

    The good coffee

I came in with a bag of beans and put it on the counter like it settled something. You said thank you. You should not have had to.

The part I did not think about

You spent four days working out what you had done.

You spent the drive back going over eleven minutes in your head, looking for the sentence that had done it, because I would not tell you and you had no other way of finding out. You spent the 27th checking a phone that had been read at 7:12 and not answered. You made two dinners and ate one of them opposite a man being courteous.

And at your mum’s, before any of it, you had made up the spare room with the flannel sheets because you knew I sleep badly there. That was the same morning.

None of that is an argument. That is you doing all the work of a relationship on your own while I decided how long to take.

The front is what I said. The back is what was true.

Turn each one over. I have been using these for years and I do not think I have ever explained one.

You asked “are we ok”

at 7:12.

I read it at 7:12

and answered at 22:40.

Side A, the drive back

The tape I hid behindSide A

I put this on at the top of the road so the car would not be quiet, and then let it do the whole journey for me. It is still in the glovebox. I have not been able to play it since without hearing what was not being said over the top of it.

Six things I should have said in the car

Take them one at a time. There is a line on each, and all six of them are things I could have said before Newark.

0 of 6 picked

The rest of it

My dad did this. I have known that since I was about fourteen, and I have spent the years since telling myself I do it differently because I am never loud about it. Quiet is not a better version. It is the same thing with better manners.

What actually happens is this: I say something I am ashamed of, and then I cannot find a way to say so without opening the whole argument again, so I say nothing and wait for it to go stale. That is four days of you managing on your own so that I never have to have one uncomfortable conversation.

You have never once done this to me. In eleven years you have never made me guess where I stood. I have been quietly relying on that while doing the opposite.

I am not asking for a verdict today.

— I’m sorry

Not promises. Things I will do.

Specific enough that you will know within a week if I meant it.

  1. 01When I go quiet, I say the words “I have gone quiet” out loud, even if that is all I manage that hour.
  2. 02A straight question gets an answer the same hour, even a bad one, even from the car.
  3. 03Nothing gets argued in front of your parents. It waits for the car or it waits until Tuesday.
  4. 04If I need to leave somewhere early, I say why before we are in the coats, not after.
  5. 05I do not bring things home instead of saying things. The coffee is just coffee from now on.

The rest of that week

Christmas Eve through to the morning of the 26th. All taken before the driveway.

For whenever

No obligation, and no deadline. They keep.

Stay angry as long as you need to. There is no clock on any of this and I am not going to start asking how we are doing.

Whenever. I will not go quiet, I will not explain about being tired, and I will not make you manage my reaction to your own feelings.

Also allowed. This did not need a reply to be worth writing, and the things on the list happen either way.

Say “driveway”. That is all it takes. I have agreed to that in writing now, which is the point of putting it here.

And this, which I have not said

Thank you for asking on the 27th.

You asked “are we ok” at 7:12 in the morning after a night of me saying nothing, which took more than I appreciated at the time. It would have been easier and entirely fair to wait for me to speak first. You have never once made me be the one who speaks first, and I have quietly built a whole way of behaving on top of that.

Thank you for the flannel sheets, which you put on the spare bed that same morning. Thank you for cooking on the 28th when I had earned a sandwich. And thank you for not telling your mum what the eleven minutes were about, though you would have been within your rights.

Eleven minutes in a driveway.

Ninety minutes of side A.

Fifteen hours to answer four letters.

None of it worth

one straight sentence

I could have said at Newark.

No rush.

If I go quiet again, you are allowed to say the word “driveway” and I will start talking. That is the whole system.
