A warm retro apology for going quiet. A banner goes past before anything else happens, then the page sets out the argument, the drive home, the fifteen hours it took to answer a straight question, and a set of cards where the front is the sentence you used to end the conversation and the back is what was actually true. A tape, a letter, six things you should have said in the car, and a final note that asks for nothing.

Not sure what to write? How to apologise without making it worse

What’s inside

16 scenes, in this order.

Each one is optional — switch off anything that is not your story and it disappears from the page entirely.

  1. 01

    The banner

One line, dragged across the sky. Keep it plain — a clever banner reads as a stunt.

  2. 02

    The opening

  3. 03

    What I did

Name the silence as an action, not a mood. “I went quiet” is a thing you did to someone.

  4. 04

    The four days

Hours, not adjectives. The gaps are the apology.

  5. 05

    What it cost you

The effect on them, not your intent. Silence is felt as a punishment whether or not it was meant as one.

  6. 06

What I said, and what was true

The front is the sentence you used to end the conversation. The back is what was actually going on.

  7. 07

    The line

Short lines, set large. One line per line break.

  8. 08

    The tape

The thing I put on so the car would not be silent, and then hid behind.

  9. 09

    The bouquet

The obvious gesture. It only works with the words attached, one to a stem.

  10. 10

    The letter

The part they read twice. Write it like you talk.

  11. 11

    What changes

Concrete and checkable. “I will communicate better” is not something anyone can hold you to.

  12. 12

    The album

  13. 13

    If you want them

Sealed notes they open one at a time, whenever they need one.

  14. 14

    The thank you

Thank them for what they did, not for forgiving you. Ask for nothing here.

  15. 15

    The closing lines

One line per line break. Leave a blank line for a pause.

  16. 16

    The last words

Five things I would do differently, dated, checkable. That is what made it work.
Naveen · Apology · July 2026
Serious in the right way. The plane at the start felt slightly off for the occasion.
Ritika · Sorry · June 2026
Sent it, waited, and it was the start of the conversation rather than the end.
Sahil · Making amends · May 2026
