How to make a just because gift page for no reason

Anything sent on a birthday proves you own a calendar. The same thing sent on a Tuesday in March, when nothing was due and nobody was watching, is the only version that proves something else.

Pick a day that had no claim on it

On 14 February you sent something because the shops told you to. On a Wednesday in the middle of March you sent it because you were standing in a car park thinking about somebody. Send the second sort of thing, on the second sort of day.

The good days are dull ones: mid-week, mid-month, nothing booked. Stay at least a fortnight clear of their birthday. Anything that lands inside that fortnight gets filed as an early birthday present, and the day stops being an empty one. Keep clear of the fortnight before Christmas too, and of the week they are moving flat or sitting an exam, when everything arriving is admin.

If there is a soft reason underneath — they had a rotten January, they left a job, they moved back in with their parents for a while — do not lead with it. Put it in one line near the end. Leading with it turns the day into an occasion again, and they will read the rest as sympathy.

How long should a page with no occasion be?

Short enough that they do not start calculating. An unprompted page with thirty scenes reads two ways, and both are bad: either you are building up to something they should be worried about, or you have spent a whole evening on them and they now owe you an evening back.

Just Because 01 arrives with fourteen scenes. Switch off the archive, the song, the open-when notes, the big line, the toast, the one-more-thing scene and the closing verse, and seven are left: the opening, the two written pages, the cards, the history, the letter and the last words. That is the version to send on an ordinary Tuesday.

Fill the caps only as far as you need. The history takes ten moments; four is plenty. The cards take six; write four, and make each one a thing they actually did. The archive takes twelve photographs and one line underneath the whole set. Six good ones under a caption naming what was happening beats twelve under a caption that says nothing.

The test is whether they could read it standing in a queue at the pharmacy and feel fine about it. If the honest answer is that they would need to sit down first, put half of it away and keep that half for a birthday.

What do you say when nothing has happened?

An unexpected link from you, with no date anywhere near it, is read as bad news until proved otherwise. Say plainly that nothing has happened and nobody is ill. Say it in the first line of the page, and say it again in the message you send the link with. All the preview gives them is that somebody has made them something, which on an ordinary Tuesday reads as bad news until you say otherwise.

Then give the reason, such as it is, and make it an object. Stuck behind a caravan on the A34 and thinking about the four hours they once drove for you without asking why. The garden centre car park where you both sat for two hours rather than going in. The song in the supermarket that they sang badly for two hours in a car.

Do not end by asking for a reply. No request for a call, no question at the bottom, no line about hoping they liked it. The premise is that nothing was owed in either direction, and one request at the end quietly cancels that.

A plan is the exception, because it does not need answering today. Something you have already booked — the date, the place, the deposit paid, the link that proves it — sits at the end without asking anything of them. A question about whether they are free is a different thing and belongs in a text.

Making one for a friend without it tipping romantic

What makes a page read romantic is rarely the words. It is everything standing around them: photographs where only the two of you appear, a counter of days since you met, a slow song, the word always. Swap each one out. Use the photographs with four other people in the frame. Count the number of times you have had the same argument about the route rather than the days since you met. Put on the song they sang badly in a car.

Friendship 01 and Just Because 01 have no counter in them anywhere, which is why they are the two to start from for a friend. Missing You carries one on the days since you last saw them, which is a partner’s line rather than a friend’s, so switch that scene off if you use it.

If the friendship has run for years on insults and arguments about directions, the sincere paragraph works because it interrupts that. Sincerity from the first screen onwards reads as somebody else writing, and it is the thing that makes a friend go quiet.

One test settles most of it: every line should be fine read over their shoulder by somebody who was not there. A line that would need explaining is a line to rewrite, not a line to risk.

What if they are embarrassed by attention?

Assume the reply will be one line, a joke, or nothing until tomorrow. Somebody who hates being looked at does not suddenly become fluent because you wrote something true. If what comes back is "you absolute idiot", that is gratitude in the only register available to them, and pushing for a better version of it is how you spoil the thing.

Send it in the evening, to them alone. Not at eleven on a Monday when they are at a desk with people either side, and never in a group chat, where six other people react and they have to perform in front of all of them.

Then leave it. Do not ask whether they opened it, do not bring it up on Saturday, and do not mention it again unless they do. If you want to hear from them, ring on Thursday about something else entirely.

Should it be locked, or just a link?

A password changes the tone before a word is read: it says out loud that there is an audience of one. It has to be something they cannot get wrong. Two words, one shared fact, no dates and no nicknames that could be spelled three ways. The two-word name of the pub you both stopped going to. The street their first flat was on.

Send the password in the same message as the link, in the same breath, and do not make a puzzle of it. There is nowhere for them to look it up, and a password that holds them out for ten minutes turns a gift into an exam.

Send the version with no password to a parent, an older relative, or anyone who reads links on a phone at arm’s length with the brightness down. A password screen on that phone ends the gift before the first line.

The same thing, written badly and written well

  • Just wanted to say I appreciate you.

You have driven me somewhere at short notice four times this year and never once asked what for.

  • No reason, just thinking of you today.

I was behind a caravan on the A34 for forty minutes and laughed the whole way about your sense of direction.

  • Sorry if this is a bit random.

Nothing has happened, nobody is ill, and you can go back to your afternoon in four minutes.

  • You are honestly the best person I know.

You are the only one who does not turn somebody else’s bad week into a plan.

  • You mean so much to me.

There are two people I would ring at two in the morning. You are the one who would wait until the morning to ask why.

Questions people ask about this

what is a just because gift?

A just because gift is something sent on a day with no birthday, anniversary or apology attached to it. The timing is the whole point: nothing obliged you, so the only explanation left is that you were thinking about the person. It works best small — a few photographs, four or five specific memories, and one paragraph you have never said out loud.

is it weird to send a gift for no reason?

No, though the first ten seconds may worry them. A link arriving from you with no occasion near it reads as bad news until proved otherwise, and the preview they see gives nothing away. Put the plain version in the message itself — nothing has happened, nobody is ill, this takes four minutes — and send the link underneath it.

what day should i send a just because gift?

Pick a dull weekday with nothing near it — a Tuesday or Wednesday, mid-month, at least a fortnight clear of their birthday. Anything that lands inside that fortnight gets filed as an early birthday present and the no-occasion effect goes with it. Send it in the evening, when they are at home rather than between meetings, and send it to them alone.

how long should a just because gift page be?

Seven scenes and under five minutes to read. Keep the opening, the two written pages, the cards, the history, the letter and the last words. Turn off the other seven: the archive, the song, the open-when notes, the big line, the toast, the extra reveal and the closing verse. Anything longer creates a debt they start calculating.

what do i write when there is no occasion?

Start by saying nothing is wrong, then name the specific thing that set it off. Being stuck behind a caravan for forty minutes and thinking about the time they drove four hours for you without asking why is a reason. Just thinking of you is not. One object with a place attached to it does more work than a paragraph of warmth.

can i make a just because page for a friend without it seeming romantic?

Yes, and the fix is in the details rather than the words. Use photographs with other people in the frame, leave any days-since counter switched off, and count the arguments you have repeated instead. Friendship 01 and Just Because 01 carry no counter at all, which is why they are the two to start from for a friend.

what do i say when they ask what prompted it?

Tell them the truth in one sentence and change the subject. Something small set it off — a song in a supermarket, a road you were sat on for forty minutes — and saying so is better than implying there is more to come. If you dress it up as a lead-in to news, they will spend a week waiting for the news.

should a surprise gift page have a password?

Add a password only if the person would enjoy being kept out for a moment. Make it two words and one shared fact, never a date or a nickname that can be spelled three ways, and send it in the same message as the link. There is nowhere on the page for them to look it up. For a parent or an older relative, send it with no password at all.

If you are stuck

Answer one of these honestly and you will have the sentence the page needs.

  1. 01What did they do for you that they have never mentioned since?
  2. 02What were you doing on the last ordinary day you thought about them?
  3. 03Which argument have you had so many times that you would miss it?
  4. 04What is the thing everybody assumes about them that is wrong?
  5. 05What would you say if you knew they would never bring it up again?
  6. 06Which single sentence would you keep if you could only send one?
