How to apologise without making it worse
Most apologies fail for the same three reasons, and all of them are fixable. This is the one page on the site where restraint matters more than effort.
Name the specific thing
Every bad apology hides in vagueness. "If you felt hurt" is not an apology; it is a hypothetical. "I am sorry for how things went" describes weather, not a choice you made.
Write the actual sentence describing what you did, and do not soften it on the way out.
Cut every "but"
The word deletes everything before it. If there is context that genuinely matters, it belongs in a conversation later — not in the apology, where it reads as a defence wearing an apology’s clothes.
Show you understand the cost
Most apologies stop at the act. The stronger move is to name what it cost the other person — the two seconds they had to decide whether to make a scene, the fact that they raised it later anyway knowing how you might react.
That is the part that proves you have actually thought about it rather than just about being forgiven.
Make the commitments small and checkable
"I will be better" is not something anyone can hold you to. "When you tell me something hurt, I stop and listen before responding" is.
Three concrete ones beat ten sweeping ones.
End without asking for anything
Do not request a verdict. The last line should make clear there is no deadline on their answer, and then you should actually honour that.
Keep the whole thing short. A very long apology quietly makes the page about the person who made it.
The same thing, written badly and written well
I am sorry if you felt hurt by what happened.
I made a joke at your expense in front of people whose opinion matters to you.
I am sorry, but I was under a lot of pressure.
I am sorry. The pressure is an explanation, and you did not ask for one.
Can we please move past this?
No rush. I will be here whenever you are ready, and I am not going to keep asking.
If you are stuck
Answer one of these honestly and you will have the sentence the page needs.
- 01What exactly did you do, in one sentence, with no context and no defence?
- 02What did it cost them, specifically?
- 03What will you do differently that they could actually verify?
- 04What are you not entitled to ask for right now?
