A proper apology

Restrained on purpose. No confetti, no grand gesture — those make an apology about you.

Getting it right

Name the specific thing

Every bad apology hides in vagueness. "If you felt hurt" is not an apology. Write the actual sentence describing what you did, and do not soften it on the way out.

No "but"

The word cancels everything before it. If there is context that matters, it belongs in a conversation later, not in the apology.

Commitments should be small and checkable

"I will be better" is not something anyone can hold you to. "I stop and listen before responding" is.

End by giving them room

Do not ask for a verdict. The last line should make clear there is no deadline on their answer.

If you are stuck

Answer one of these honestly.

The software is the easy part. These are the questions that produce the sentence worth putting on the page.

  • 01What exactly did you do — in one sentence, no context, no defence?
  • 02What did it cost them, specifically?
  • 03What will you do differently that they could actually verify?
  • 04What are you not entitled to ask for right now?
